Tube Jigs

Postby spdmtl » Mon Mar 26, 2012 8:20 pm

Been tryin to add to my fishing skills lately. Like, my deep water fishing, for one.
Mainly deeper than 6-8 ft. up to about 20ft. Living in the Tampa Bay area most
lakes around here are less than 12ft. but, probably average 6-8ft. around here.
I've been going to Lake Manatee lately and that lake can get to 38ft. by the dam
and holes everywhere to 20ft. filled with big fish, so that's the reason for wanting to learn to fish deeper water. I went out and bought some deeper
running crankbaits, got some football jigs and such and using a whole lotta
patience. Well I pretty much ran outta patience. Tried, tried and tried again.
Nothing seems to be working :x ------- untill I bought some tube jigs. WOW! :o
Not really sure if it's my skills improving, the time of year or the new baits but,
I've been slayin' 'em lately! 8-) They almost jump in my 'yak from deep water just for these jigs! So I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth, so to speak but, I'll
keep using these things and slowly bring the football jigs back into play to try and round out my deep water skills. Keeping my fingers crossed that eveything keeps going my way.

Way to go! How are you rigging your tubes? Texas Rig, thread them on a open jig head, inserting jig head inside the tube head?

I can never have enough tubes. They work in so many situations, and simulate so many different baits, that I think they are the single most effective lure in my tackle box.

Now I have to go buy tubes.

love the new yum f2's!

Not many days go by when I don't throw a tube for at least part of that time. I go through a lot, and I mean A LOT of tubes throughout the year. Smallies love them, so do largemouths. Amazing little lure they are! Most of the time I run a 2 3/4" Get Bit tube on a 1/8 oz 2/0 head, exposed hook.

Can some of you guys please post pics on how you're rigging the tubes? I've been trying but I'm obviously using to small a gap of hook. I also want to learn how to rig it with a jig head. Thanks!

Mostly use an internal weight 3/0 hook tube jig. I fish rocky rivers so use a wire weedguard to help them from getting stuck & loosing them. Mostly like an exposed hook because the hook to thumb ratios are better.

Here's what I pour:

And here's one in action on an upper 20's, low 30's day in a Mid Atlantic river
