Smallmouth Bass Fly Swap (closed)

Postby WhiskeyWrangler » Mon Apr 02, 2012 11:18 pm

So, let me regal you of a tale of despair and discovery... :?:  :?:

On Sunday Dlest, his brother and I did a float on the Greenbrier River. We had not had the chance to scout it out so we relieved on a local campground/shuttle service for information....

Contrary to our intel the river was high and pushy. But, still no big drops or anything close to a Class III. We started out and 15 minutes later his brother turtled and lost his gear (rods, tackle), and kayak. I went and finally caught it down river while Dlest helped his brother out and get changed.

Next set of rapids Dlest turtles and lost his rods...

So, being the second time in under 6 months he has lot his rods I've convinced him to take a more active interest in fly fishing.

And.... So.....

Any takers for a fly swap? The main theme would be smallmouth bass. And I will host.

Update:

Okay, so a old bird told me I should adhere to and post the rules...

All general rules apply

Deadline for signing up is April 15th

Max tyers is going to be 10.

Once we get to the number we will set a date for the flies, probably around May 30th.

Only limit is it must be a fly you would use for smallmouth (not very limiting, huh)

Tyers:
1. WhiskerWrangler- Van's Wiggle Fish
2. Dlest- Kevin Gallop's Articulated Butt Monkey
3. LoneStar- Crease Fly-slightly weighted (received)
4. Hokie- clouser minnow (recieved)
5. Shakes- High Tail Craw (received)
6.VAkayakangler- Wooly Bug-ga (Yeah, I called it a Bug-ga!) (received)
7. Kayakfish- Hopper (received)
8. Joelw23- Murdich Minnow
9. Ratdz- Education Shad (received)
10. FishyBoy
11. Yakbum- Shannon Streamers (recieved)

This is my first time hosting, so please feel free to give some advice/criticism. Looking forward to seeing what we get!

Tonight is the first time I noticed it was WHISKER! That makes so much more sense I've been thinking for a year, "man. I like bourbon, but this guy REALLY likes it!" I've even told friends of mine, "hey, did you see that post the Whiskey Wrangler made?"...Yeah I've even been trying to rationalize it... I thought maybe your job was to transport the casks around the distillery or something. -knobcreekman

Ouch. Having just turtled, I know the feeling of turtling and losing gear. I

DId you guys use the USGS gauges for information? Because they seemed to be off. Based on the reading George & I had, we expected a lower and clearer river also.

That sucks about the gear loss, glad everyone is OK. If the gauges are off, then there might be a lot of us losing gear this year.

Then take a break from the smallies and wet your salty side!!! The tog action is lights out right now, still some big stripers hanging about and the bull reds are here already!! Oh yeah, the flounder bite is starting and the blues and specks are in force right now to boot.

What are you waiting for......come on down!!!! I am planning on heading out Friday if you are interested.

That would be great Chuck, but it's a little too far to drive right now. Thanks for the offer--I might take you up on it one of these days.

No, because of knowing very little about the river we relied more on local knowledge. It wasn't bad, just a lot more pushy then expected.
