Marking your crankbaits

Longer than you would think. I have touched a few of the markings up in the past, but I wish I had a ballpark amount of time to tell you. Quite a few outings I would say using the same lure.

I’m thinking about going through my crank baits and marking the depth on them… Gerrr! This is going to suck! Thanks god for Google and Bass Pro’s web site!

If have to categorize them, why not just put similar baits together in the same box? Split them up - shallow, mid, deep. That's not how I split mine up (mine divided by what rod I use to throw them), but that seems to work for most, and it's a lot easier than marking each bait.

Its not like I would have to mark 100+ crank baits or anything!

Unless you have multiple boxes of crank baits (like many people do) that are all organized by depth and color, marking the baits is a good idea.

I dont throw crankbaits enough to justify carrying more than one 3700 box that I keep various sizes of baits in. I starting marking my baits a long time ago with a fine tip sharpie. Agree with the point made about the variables impacting depth, but by marking them I have a starting reference.

OK I'm a newbie on here, but not a newbie to fishing.

If I had any need/desire to be organized...( ha ha ha )..I'd use a color system.

Maybe buy a half dozen different bottles/colors of women's nail polish. Assign some set of logical color system.. Maybe red 2-5 feet; white 5 - 8 feet; blue 8 - 10 feet etc.

Then, I'd put a color dot on the bill of the various lures.

Now, I recognize that speed; angle; line size etc. affect the depth. But, with a red white blue (and more) system...I could then adjust if I changed lines and angles.

I think that makes the most sense. Thanks for everyone's input. I too realize that there are a lot of variables that will prevent your crank from reaching its advertised depth, but I think a reference point would help me get started. Thanks again guys!

I carry a couple of crankbaits - don't have any complicated labeling scheme - and I keep them straight.
