Fishing Rod Insurance

Postby usmc22 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 8:14 pm

Well... after a 17.5" largemouth I will be getting USAA's Valuable Personal Property Insurance... My brand new Dobyns Champion 683C rod and Abu Garcia Revo STX took a swim (and I took a swim to try and find it to no avail). While unhooking the fish I was more concerned on getting him measured taking a pic and putting him back but must have bumped my rod. USAA doesn't cover loss under my current policy... must be the one thing cause I tend to overload on insurance and get the lowest deductibles possible...

Anyone else got insurance on their stuff?

Ummmm. I got house and car insurance.

Fishing Gear Insurance I file under experience on the water. If I did more river fishing, then maybe leashes, floats and what not.

Maybe i'm a cheapo, but if i cant afford to replace on my next payday then i dont need to take in the yak with me. I use mostly pfluger and BPS gear to keep cost down, otherwise like mr scrogg said chaulk it up to the experience.

That cracked me up and nothing wrong with it. I can replace it since this is really the only hobby I got and spend around 100 days a year fishing so I think it's all relative.

I've been at it 16 and never dumped one till today... My old man's got a strong magnet so we're going to take his boat out tomorrow and give it a go again but I was on the break of hypothermia swimming for it today with temps hovering in the 50's with pouring rain and 10-20 mile an hour winds. I ordered another reel and called Dobyns because I have an order they haven't shipped yet and was hoping to throw a replacement on there but hopefully I catch it tomorrow and will get my pitching or frog model I've had my eye on...

Still going to insure the kayak, gear, and rod/reels... think it could pay for itself and for the price of a lure a month it'll be worth it if I ever need it and if not it won't break the bank...

I am new to both fishing & kayaking - so I have rod leashes on both of the rods I carry out with me and I leave them attached even while using them. If I switch rods, I also switch the tie-off points to keep them from getting tangled as I keep the rod I am not using in the stbd aft flush mount rod-holder.

I haven't tossed a rod since I was about 15, but I don't want to lose one now.

i got pretty drunk at the beach and tried to stand up in my kayak in the ocean...everything fell out.

I was able to recover all my rod and reels but I lost a bunch of other stuff. Lesson learned. Never drink (too much) and paddle. Id say the cut off should be 6 or 7 beers....11 is entirely too many.

Also, get some leashes or tape a pool noodle to the rod.

I hear ya, I use rod leashes for all the rods I'm not using, and wasn't drinking... just the excitement of fish and wanting to get him back in the water since I catch and release except trout or stripper.

Thanks, headed out now into another extremely rainy day with winds that'll make a baitcaster spit out alll its line into the wind...

One tip to try and retrieve a lost rod...

Carry one of those old fashioned stringers made from chain with metal clips. Tie some light rope (550 cord works well) to the leash end and open all the clips. Toss and drag along the bottom. If it snags, you can almost always pull hard and straighten the caught clip.

I've retrieved more than a few items lost overboard using this.
