Any Abu Garcia fanatics tried this?

Postby jason_h1 » Mon Jun 18, 2012 9:03 pm

Hi. I recently went on a 3 day fishing trip to the Devil's River in TX. Great trip, but I lost one rod and reel in a rapid, and broke my other pole going through a weed garden!!! Funny thing is, while looking for my lost Abu bait caster set up, I found someone else's Shimano spinning rig! That left me scrounging for gear when I got back, and I dug out an old Abu ambassadeur that is in need of a new worm gear and pawl. It's working for now since I stuffed a piece of aluminum foil under the pawl to tighten things up. I ran across this little "upgrade" and I was wondering if anyone has tried it, and if it's worth the extra money (about double.)

Thanks.

I have two 6000 size abus on surf rods. I added the bearing levelwind to one and notice a little more casting distance. Both reels will easily cast over 100 yards so for me it wasn't really worth it to replace the second levelwind.

1st caveat: Mike's is in Canada. That means extended shipping times. You can put these kits together yourself pretty easily.

It depends on your casting ability. You might get a little more out of it. It's pretty much a required upgrade if you upgrade to a ceramic pawl.

Speaking of, let me know if you need a new OEM pawl...I've got like a couple dozen of them.

Thanks for the replies, guys. What I'm really interested in is the longevity of the dual bearing kit. Will it last longer than the standard version? Though, longer casts are always good. No need to send this reel off, I'll do the work myself.

@jfrancho, do you have any worm gears to go with it? It's C3 "Original." The numbers are wore off, I think it's a 5500.

Thanks again!

No worm gears, but Pure Fishing will. I've never had a problem getting parts from them.
