River shoes

Postby Riverpirate » Thu Jul 19, 2012 2:31 pm

I have tried about every river shoe out there. None have worked so far. They either allowed sand and snails in and then not out, or they slipped on the rocks, or were to big and heavy. I had settled on just my plan old Chaco's. At least they were light and when sand or snails got under my foot a quick swoosh in the water would wash them out. Still my toes and ankles were exposed to rocks. Then I found the Chaco Tedinho Pro Boots. http://www.chacos.com/US/en-US/Mobile/P ... 491/27545M

After several weeks of trial, they are the best I have found. The soles are pretty good at sticking to the rocks. Felt would be better but the whole wading industry is moving away from felt. They are high enough to keep sand and snails out. They are light weight and fast drying. They are comfortable and provide enough protection from the rocks. They are the best I have found.

Actually they are sexy with shorts. But you have to have the right legs.

Matt, agree'd.

Although $130's not a bad price for wading shoes, I've never spent more than $30 a pair. And in the old days, an old pair of sneaks is all I needed.

Been eyeing the SIMMS wading boots, and they cost more than the Chaco's. Only problem is I'd need a set for the waders, and a smaller set for summer.

Nah you don't need two pairs of boots. Just get a pair of the neoprene gravel guard socks. A little warmer in the summer but it works out well if you are wading the majority of the time and not sitting in your boat. I wear mine with my wading boots when wet wading in the summer time in the mountains.

I've been wearing the five finger shoes (or whatever you call them) to wade. You get a little sand, but nothing bigger because they are snug to your ankle. Heck, my brother gave them to me cause he didn't like them, so not bad for free.

I'm not sure I could justify $130+ for wading shoes...

Chaco makes a great product. I have a pair of their sandals, and one of the best benefits of them is if anything breaks on the shoe they can repair it. You can literally send them a worn out sandal and they rehab it back to a brand new sandal for a fraction of the price. I am willing to bet this is a benefit that comes with those shoes as well. I have bad knees so I usually spend more money on shoes to make sure I have the comfort and support I need.

My New Balance Water Shoes are pretty nice. You'll get some sand in them too, maybe a piece of pea size pebble, but a little swoosh through the water, and it's gone. Coming in Wide Widths was a plus for me. (Damn Fat Feet!!)

That's what I've got and I'm also satisfied. Whenever I have to replace them, probably go with the Columbia Drainmakers.
