I ended up catching 6. Two were nice (18 to 19 inch range), but I didn't get to measure them because I was back in my Commander, and I don't have a ruler on it. Jerkbaits again. The most effective presentation was a long burn (1/4 to 1/3 of the way back to the kayak) followed by a pause of at least 10 seconds. I also caught one by deadsticking a nose hooked beaver, but it was a smaller smallie. I worked an area that I wasn't sure would be "winter water". Some time invested outside of the pools I know well may have paid off. We'll see come the end of next month!

I've been GPS waypoint marking fish caught over 18 inches this month in an effort to nail down other "winter pools". I write about this method of finding winter pools in the smallmouth chapter of Chad's book. The difference between what I used to do (make mental notes and record on a map when I get home), and what I've been doing with the GPS is that this task is now easier and more accurate thanks to the technology.
