7/2 - destination has changed - Diascund Creek Reservoir?

Postby Hanover_Yakker » Mon Jun 28, 2010 7:42 pm

Looking for some input on this one. It appears that Waller Mill has fees associated with the usage of the water - $2 park entry and $6 for all day fishing. Not sure any of us want to pay that, so let's try a different location that is free.

I plan on heading out by 4:30am, since it is only 45 minutes away from my house. The sun is due up at approximately 5:52am, and I prefer to be on the water at or before sunrise to get a chance at the early bite. The DGIF site has some good info on the body of water. I have all my setups ready ahead of time for the early bite. I even have one ultralight setup with a silver Rooster Tail just in case things are slow. Apparently there is a good White Perch population there in addition to the landlocked stripers and LMB.

You know I'm in. Can't wait, as this will be my first time fishing the tidewater area. Of course, as the newbie, I have to ask....where do we park and launch from? :oops: I'm assuming the park will be closed before daylight. The VADGIF site didn't really mention much about that.

Try these GPS coordinates: 37.315101,-76.703861

According to VA DGIF,
Waller Mill Park is located off of Route 645 (Airport Road) between U.S. Route 60 in Williamsburg and exit 234 off I-64. From Route 60, take Airport Road to the east. The park will be on the right after you cross over the upper half of the reservoir. If traveling by way of I-64, take exit 234 to Rochambeau Road. Rochambeau Road will double back to Airport Road. Take Airport Road to the park entrance. The boat ramp and concession stand will at the end of the park entrance road

Also, most facilities like this are an hour before dawn max, otherwise they are sunrise to sunset, including some with gates that close automatically. I have personally not been there before, so it will be new to me as well. If it is locked when I get there, I will simply find a McDonalds if I am way early, or I will just sit and wait for the Parks Officer to come unlock it.

See you there.

I'm game, since I live north of Richmond I'll be coming down I95, I295 and I64. Like Flyfisher said if you want to meet up somewhere we can all travel together. If you interested just post up a time and place.

I hope my new Falcon Cara Senko rod arrives so I can try it out. I already have the Shimano Curado 200E7 reel setting on my desk. :D

Let's meet here then:

37.605074,-77.370747

At 4:45am, then we can all head out together. It is the parking lot across from the Mechanicsville Park & Ride, and we can shoot right back out onto 295 and head on to the reservoir. From this point, the reservoir should be about 45 - 50 minutes total driving time.

I drive a silver Dodge Caravan and will be sporting the SS Tropicana errr I mean my 2010 WS Ride 135 on top.

I did a little digging around and found the website for Williamsburg. It looks like the park does not open until 7am :cry: and there will be a total of $8 in parking and fishing fees.

Website page for hours of operation;
http://www.williamsburgva.gov/Index.aspx?page=477

website page for usage fees;
http://www.williamsburgva.gov/Index.aspx?page=915

Well I need to quit screwing off and go back to work.
