What kind of vise or start-up kit?

Postby jacofish » Tue May 26, 2009 8:54 pm

So i've been fly fishing for about a year and a half now and have been looking into tying my own flies. I already have several books and various designs and have done a little tying on borrowed equipment but i'm officially ready to buy my own equipment and begin. Right now I only need the bare essentials but I know i'll be investing pretty heavily in this soon. Any recommendations or what do yall use?

My suggestion is to buy a good vise, decide what type of flies you are going to be tying and then if your tying
trout flies: dubbing, angel hair, hen capes, fine hackles for tying, 8/0 thread, small diamiter lead, fine wire in gold, silver, and bronze, size 10 - 16 dry, and wet fly hooks. That will give you a good start on trout flies.
Bass Flies: 6/0-3/0 thread, deer tails in varoius colors, rubber legs in varoius colors black and white stripe, and chartreuse striped are major, larger rooster capes i brite colors, 6-1/0 size hooks, foam, etc.
I tell you what you let me know what you are interested in tying and I will make you up a starter kit for far less than you can buy. :D

Check out Bartlows, Janns Netcraft.

I got a cheap vise, but it'll need replacing after a couple thousand jigs have been tied on it.

Collected stuff as I went, but settled on rabbit, bucktail, and silicon hair for bass jigs.

Don't tie anything under a 1/o

don't buy i kit.

invest in a decent vice and buy materials for one or two flies. then tie em and see if you like it.

Well I want to thank everyone for the great advice, and sorry for the late reply but I'm officially finished with all my finals and school as of today. I would love to take you up on that offer kayakfish and to be honest I'll probably be targeting bass and would most likely start off with tying bass flies. Also depending on how much time and money the summer job I have yet to get leaves me with, I would love to begin tying for trout by next winter. Would shipping to San Antonio Texas be a problem though?

jaco,

Once you decide what you want to invest, pm tina and she will let you know what she can set you up with within that range BEFORE you go ordering off the net, or buying in a shop somewhere... and no, San Antone is not a problem. My kid's godfather is a park police officer on the riverwalk there. ;)
